Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His being was mostly pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to tend to his herd of rams.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind across the single tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day upon day, watching over his wards imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plot.
Narratives of wolves preying on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.
One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance check here but found nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is hard to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
